art nouveau (liberty) architecture

art nouveau had main , original exponents in giuseppe sommaruga , ernesto basile. former author of palazzo castiglioni in milan, while second projected expansion of palazzo montecitorio in rome.


however, in 1920s , following years new architectural language, razionalismo, introduced. form of futurist architecture pioneered antonio sant elia , hence gruppo 7, formed in 1926. after dissolution of group, adopted single artists giuseppe terragni (casa del fascio, como), adalberto libera (villa malaparte in capri) , giovanni michelucci (firenze santa maria novella railway station).


during fascist period, razionalismo outranked novecento italiano, rejected avant-garde themes , aimed instead revive art of past. important members in field of architecture gio ponti, pietro aschieri , giovanni muzio. movement inspired marcello piacentini in creation of simplified neoclassicism linked rediscovery of imperial rome. piacentini author of several works in many italian cities, important of controversial creation of via della conciliazione in rome.

rationalist-fascist architecture italian architectural style developed during fascist regime , in particular starting late 1920s. promoted , practiced gruppo 7 group, architects included luigi figini, guido frette, sebastiano larco, gino pollini, carlo enrico rava, giuseppe terragni, ubaldo castagnola , adalberto libera. 2 branches have been identified, modernist branch giuseppe terragni being prominent exponent, , conservative branch of marcello piacentini , la burbera group influential.
