History Multnomah County Courthouse



a february 2001 earthquake exposed weaknesses in building s structure. plans addition of new floor, infill of light , major seismic retrofit considered, costs estimated in 2011 between $176 million , $220 million. however, in march 2013, county board of commissioners decided instead work toward planning construction of new courthouse building in different location, replace existing building. search suitable sites new courthouse followed, , in april 2015 county commission chose site @ west end of hawthorne bridge location planned new courthouse.


construction began in october 2016, , opening public projected 2020. new building 17 stories tall , have 44 courtrooms. located in block bounded first avenue, madison street, naito parkway, , jefferson street, , main entrance @ intersection of first , madison. done existing courthouse when new 1 opens has not yet been decided.
