in august 2007, raila s own orange democratic movement-kenya suffered setback when split two, odinga becoming head of orange democratic movement (odm) while other faction, odm-k, headed kalonzo musyoka parted ways raila.


on 1 september 2007, odm elected odinga presidential candidate in national delegates conference held @ moi international sports centre in nairobi. odinga received 2,656 votes; other candidates received significant numbers of votes musalia mudavadi 391 , william ruto 368. earlier, najib balala had withdrawn candidature , endorsed raila. defeated candidates expressed support odinga afterward, , mudavadi named running mate.


odinga launched presidential campaign in uhuru park in nairobi on 6 october 2007.


raila s bid presidency failed when after 27 december presidential election, electoral commission declared kibaki winner on 30 december 2007, placing him ahead of odinga 232,000 votes. jeffrey sachs (professor of economics , director of earth institute @ columbia university, , special advisor former un secretary general) faulted united states approach post-election crisis , recommended independent recount of vote.

raila , odm leaders rallied against decision james orengo , prof. nyong o calling mass action. later violence broke out in country. government s response heavy-handed deployed police , paramilitary units counter public protests.


following 2 months of unrest, led death of 1000 people , displacement of 250, 000, deal between odinga , kibaki, provided power-sharing , creation of post of prime minister, signed in february 2008; brokered former un secretary general kofi annan. odinga sworn in prime minister, along power-sharing cabinet, on 17 april 2008. post of prime minister last held jomo kenyatta between 1963 , 1964 following independence. odinga second person in kenya s history hold position.
