the temple first built in 515 during liang dynasty (502-557). used lie @ northeast foot of purple mountain, i.e. ming xiaoling mausoleum located, since hongwu emperor of ming dynasty (1368–1644) chose place mausoleum , temple moved present place. temple named hongwu emperor himself. used large , covered area of on 300,000 square metres. later destroyed in warfare during reign of xianfeng emperor in qing dynasty (1644–1911) , rebuilt during reign of tongzhi emperor. in temple, except buddhas , bodhisattvas, xuanzang , relics enshrined , worshipped.


wuliang hall

beamless hall


wuliang hall, or beamless hall, constructed in 1381, , 22 metres high , 53.8 metres wide. hall enjoys high reputation special architectural techniques. has 3 archways on front , rear sides respectively. structure built bricks bottom top entirely, without piece of wood or single nail. called wuliang hall, since wuliang means beamless. happens hall enshrined amitābha (the buddha of infinite light) chinese name similar wuliang . later in 1928, hall turned memorial hall soldiers lost lives in northern expedition (1926–1928). more 30,000 soldiers enshrined.


linggu pagoda

linggu pagoda not connected temple, designed american architect henry k murphy , built between 1930 , 1932 sign of remembrance soldiers. nine-stories tall pagoda stands 60.5 metres high. speeches made sun yat-sen , epigraphs of chiang kai-shek inscribed on tower.


in temple, there 3 superb tablet, on painting of baozhi painted wu daozi, famous painter; memorial poem written li bai, tang dynasty poet; calligraphy written yan zhenqing, well-known tang dynasty calligrapher, inscribed. since 3 masters in own field in tang dynasty, tablet considered 3 superb tablet. unfortunately, original tablet broken in warfare, present 1 duplicate made during reign of qianlong emperor in qing dynasty.
