Regular season Season structure of the NHL



since 1995–96 season, each team in nhl plays 82 regular season games, 41 each of home , road. in all, 1,271 games scheduled (480 of them inter-conference).


since 2017–2018 season, nhl regular season formula adjusted account new conference alignments. each team plays either 4 or 5 games against other teams in division (a total of 26 or 29 games in western conference, 28 games in eastern conference) playing non-divisional teams in own conference thrice (21 or 24 games in west, 24 games in east). remaining games of season inter-conference play (32 in west, 30 in east), allowing every team in league play every other team twice. 1 western conference exception 1 team each division plays 1 less game inside division , 1 more game inside conference outside division. teams rotate every season. schedule structured every nhl team plays in every arena @ least once per season. san jose sharks , colorado avalanche played each other 4 times in 2013–14 , 2015–16, twice in 2014–15 , 2016–17 in favour of 5 games against divisional opponents.


the nhl all-star game , accompanying festivities occur near midpoint of season, during no regular season games take place. every 4 years, 1998, in lieu of all-star break, there used break winter olympic games; break not happen in 2018.


two points awarded win (including in overtime or shootout), 1 point loss in overtime or shootout, , no points loss in regulation time. if, however, team pulls goaltender attacker during overtime , gives empty net goal, point awarded losing in overtime forfeited. pulling goaltender in overtime attempted in situations prior 2004–05 nhl lockout near end of season if earning single point in overtime have been worthless playoff qualification purposes, introduction of shootout has not been attempted since.
