in august 1859 abraham lincoln visited land had invested in council bluffs, , while there did not consider worth time cross river village of omaha.

in 1804, fifty years before city of omaha founded, lewis , clark expedition first arrived via missouri river. 1806 fort lisa , 1820 cabanne s trading post important fur trading outposts located in proximity river, along earlier fontenelle s post in bellevue. engineer cantonment built captain stephen watts kearny s yellowstone expedition in 1819. expedition s craft, western engineer, first steamboat venture missouri river omaha-council bluffs area.

the banner state first steamboat land materials building city in 1854, before city formally founded. until 1879 captain joseph la barge principal figure among missouri steamboat captains in years of city. according j. sterling morton, golden era steamboating on missouri 1855 1860, before advent of railroads. in 1857, 174 steamboats carrying 13,000 tons of freight tied @ omaha wharves. when omaha became outfitting center colorado gold seekers headed pikes peak in 1859, 268 steamboats arrived @ omaha between march , november.


with railroads becoming dominant form of long-range shipping , passenger travel in 1870s, riverboats in omaha became obsolete. however, late @ 1949 steamship avalon letting passengers in omaha, before becoming 1 of famous st. louis steamboats in 1960s.

in 1863, ground broke near miller s landing on missouri river first transcontinental railroad. along local financier edward creighton, george francis train promoter responsible city landing railroad. made rich convenient placement near land owned (near deer park. union pacific railroad has been headquartered in omaha since inception in 1867. in 1872, union pacific opened first [railroad] bridge across missouri omaha.


trails

in 1860s , 1870s, city became major outfitting center major trails went across nebraska, including oregon, california , mormon trails. jobbers canyon built in downtown omaha purpose of outfitting these migrants. stagecoach lines had arrived 1858, including local stage coach company in 1857, , western stage company began easterly , westerly routes in omaha. pony express , wells fargo lines maintained offices in city.


streets

omaha had terrible streets through late 1880s, caused many residents believe city not progressing appropriately. lack of responsiveness city government caused property owners throughout city did not want pay improvements. on rainy days stagecoaches sink hubcaps, , residents wore knee-high boots wade through mud, , @ times rivers ran through streets.


public transportation

in 1867 ezra millard, andrew j. hanscom, , augustus kountze formed omaha horse railway company provide horsecar service in city. late 1870s line had 5 miles (8 km) of track, 10 cars, 70 horses, 20 employees , 495,000 passengers annually. omaha cable tramway company city s cable car, , started in 1884 , ended in 1895 after consolidating horse railway omaha street railway company. in 1896 new company disbanded competitors moved in. electric car built eurastus benson between omaha , benson promote suburbs development during time.
