the department of conservation administers majority of publicly owned land in new zealand protected scenic, scientific, historic , cultural reasons, or set aside recreational purposes. more 80,000 km – 30 percent of nation s total area – administered department.
there 13 national parks (excluding disestablished te urewera national park), covering 28,900 km, on 50 conservation parks covering 18,000 km, 3,500 reserves covering around 15,000 km, , some 610 km of protected private land , covenants have been set aside scenic, scientific or ecological reasons. department has responsibility preservation , management of wildlife, , has role in management of coastal marine area 19 marine reserves , 2 other protected marine areas kermadec islands fiordland.
conservation parks
conservation parks defined in conservation act 1987 protect natural , historic resources, , facilitate public recreation , enjoyment. prior changes in 1987, many conservation parks administered forest parks, before conservation act declared such parks automatically become conservation parks in legal sense.
mainland islands
the department of conservation have set 5 mainland islands:
