thomas edward blake credited pioneer in paddleboard construction in 1930s.
while restoring historic hawaiian boards in 1926 bernice p. bishop museum, blake built replica of ignored olo surfboard ridden ancient hawaiian aliʻi (kings). lightened redwood replica (olo traditionally made wiliwili wood) drilling full of holes, covered, creating first hollow board, led creation of modern paddleboard. 2 years later, using same 16 ft (4.9 m), 120 lb (54 kg) board, blake won pacific coast surfriding championship, first mainland event integrating both surfing , paddling. blake returned hawaii break virtually every established paddling record available, setting ⁄2 mi (800 m) , 100 yd (91 m) records stood until 1955.
in 1932, using drastically modified chambered hollow board, weighing 60 lb (27 kg), on next decade tirelessly promote lifeguarding rescue tool, blake out-paddled top california watermen pete peterson , wally burton in first mainland catalina crossing race—29 mi (47 km) in 5 hours, 53 minutes. during 1930s, blake-influenced hollow boards (called “cigar boards” reporters , later “kook boxes” surfers) used in equal proportion solid plank boards both paddling , surfing until new hot curl boards led wave-riding in new direction. paddleboarding, however, basic principles of blake’s 1926 design remain relevant today.
renaissance
paddleboarding experienced renaissance in 1980s after los angeles county lifeguard rabbi norm shifren’s “waterman race”—22 mi (35 km) point dume malibu—inspired surf journalist craig lockwood begin production on high quality stock paddleboard—known waterman. design, has arguably won more races other stock paddleboard, remains popular choice today. shortly after, l.a, surfboard shaper joe bark , san diego shaper mike eaton began production, , brian szymanski s north county paddleboards (ncp) became 3 of largest u.s. paddleboard makers, producing half of estimated 3–400 paddleboards made each year in u.s. today. l.a. lifeguards gibby gibson , buddy bohn revived catalina classic event in 1982 field of 10 competitors. concurrently in hawaii, annual independence day paddleboard race sunset waimea drawing few hundred competitors, many using surfboards due lack of proper paddleboards on islands. paddlers began ordering boards mainland, local surfboard shapers dennis pang (now 1 of hawaii’s largest paddleboard makers) moved fill local niche. on both fronts, paddleboarding has been consistently gaining momentum , popularity.
in 1996 sport of paddleboarding making comeback. once domain of dedicated watermen , big wave riders in 50’s , 60’s, sport found new set of acolytes on north shore of oahu , in honolulu @ outrigger canoe club. @ time hawaii’s top paddler dawson jones. after completing 32 mi (51 km) catalina classic, catalina island manhattan beach, jones returned hawaii inspired establish race across ka’iwi channel. in 1997, race known molokai-2-oahu paddleboard world championships born. today race sells out both prone , stand paddleboarders (sup) around world compete in solo , team divisions.
