Construction M32 motorway



the southern section of m32 last built , passes close numerous housing estates.


the m32 planned key radial link through hub of network of radial , ring roads within rectangle encompassing bristol. other bounds of scheme parts of m4 (north eastern side), m5 (north western side) , tidal reaches of river avon (south western side), south eastern side not being defined landmarks. motorway partly funded gloucestershire county council , bristol city council, 75 per cent grant supplied national ministry of transport. provisionally called hambrook spur or bristol parkway during construction , built in 3 distinct stages between 1966 , 1975.


the first section, m4 junction 1, opened concurrently motorway in september 1966. second section, through junction 2, co-operative design between gloucestershire county surveyor , design consultants freeman fox & partners. construction awarded sir robert mcalpine, began work in june 1968. northern section designed full-speed (70-mile-per-hour (110 km/h)) motorway far eastville, after motorway ran on elevated section lower design standard. section opened secretary of state transport, john peyton in july 1970. total cost £3 million (now £43 million). in 1972, polystyrene storage depot on muller road near junction 2 caught fire, leading closure of southbound m32 6 days.


the third section technically demanding, ran through heavily built-up urban areas , required numerous properties demolished, along 665-foot (203 m) thirteen-arch viaduct near stapleton road built in 1874. work delayed owing three-day week industrial action in 1974, , further because of national builders strike. during construction, local government act 1972 passed, , responsibility passed newly created avon county council in april 1974. section, , hence full extent of motorway, opened traffic in may 1975. cost reported £10.4 million (now £69 million).
