The Bisterne Dragon Burley, Hampshire



burley notable in english folklore supposed location of dragon s lair @ burley beacon, outside village. there several versions of tale, 1 being creature flew every morning bisterne, supplied milk. kill dragon, valiant knight (usually named berkeley) built hide, , 2 dogs lay in wait. creature came usual 1 morning milk, , when hut door opened dogs attacked it, , while engaged knight took dragon surprise, dogs dying in affray. fight raged throughout forest, dragon dying outside lyndhurst, corpse turning great hill (now known boltons bench). though knight had defeated dragon had been mentally broken battle, , after thirty days , thirty nights went boltons bench die alone atop it, body turning yew tree can still seen today.
