early on july 29, tropical depression formed more 1,200 mi (1,930 km) east of leeward islands. on next few days, moved west-northwest, becoming tropical storm 00:00 utc on july 31. on august 1, cyclone turned northwestward , began strengthening rapidly, reaching hurricane intensity afternoon. next day, attained major hurricane intensity—winds of @ least 115 mph (185 km/h), equivalent modern-day classification of category 3 intensity—and on next few days track varied between north-northwest , northwest. on august 5, reached peak intensity of 120 mph (190 km/h), based on pressure–wind relationship. curved north , weakened, passed 80 mi (129 km) west of bermuda on august 6. few days later, transitioned extratropical cyclone , struck near port hawkesbury, nova scotia, winds of 75 mph (121 km/h) , central pressure @ or below 1,000 mb (29.5 inhg).


several ships recorded hurricane-force winds , pressures low 968 mb (28.59 inhg), though none entered eye of hurricane , sampled lowest pressure in storm. system produced winds of 54 mph (87 km/h) on bermuda passed close island. time, 5 ocean liners near each other encountered storm; portholes on orca damaged , 15 passengers treated cuts, bruises, , contusions. off nova scotia, cyclone produced unspecified number of casualties, including sinking of schooners sylvia mosher , sadie knickle. between 55 , 58 deaths occurred, including 49 from 2 ships crashing ashore sable island. in nova scotia, storm downed trees , electrical poles, damaging homes , leaving telephone service outages. crops , fruit trees damaged. high winds interrupted telegraph communications in newfoundland.
