History Nahant, Massachusetts







native americans called area nahant, meaning point or island. original indian name of place, nahanten, signifies twins or 2 things united, referring 2 connected islands forming it. located on tied island jutting massachusetts bay, first settled in 1630, in second year of puritan coming. servants of isaac johnson grazed cattle on land, , used citizens of lynn grazing cattle, sheep , goats. before 1800 there 3 homes on island: built breeds , hoods, , johnson home built jeremiah gray. first hotel built 1 of johnsons 1802, , in 1817 steamboat ran daily between boston , nahant. town part of lynn; when temperance movement threatened summer resort trade in 1853, nahant incorporated separate town. in late 19th century, home of country s first amusement parks, popular summer retreat wealthy, including poet henry wadsworth longfellow. geologist louis agassiz resident , artist william stanley haseltine produced many versions of oil painting rocks @ nahant . during world war ii, east point site of coastal artillery. town park, , location of marine science center northeastern university.

the old nahant life saving station (nlss) on nahant road , new war memorial erected across street nlss renovated in 2004.


in 2003, dilapidated valley road school refurbished , re-commissioned nahant community center, home many local activities , banquets, including local boy scout troop 50.


on september 25, 2005, town of nahant officially commemorated rebuilt bailey s hill gazebo calantha sears gazebo. original built bicentennial in 1976, , on years had fallen disrepair. funding woman s club of nahant , collaboration town of nahant, local residents contributed reconstruction. besides cement base, remaining piece of original wooden cylinder in center of roof, still bears 1976 emblem – repainted nahant local octavia randolph.
